Microchip MCP2517FD-H/JHA is a new, cost-effective, and small-footprint external CAN FD Controller designed to incorporate CAN functionality into microcontrollers lacking native CAN FD peripherals or requiring additional CAN FD channels. The device supports both Classical CAN 2.0B and CAN Flexible Data Rate (CAN FD) formats, enabling flexible communication in automotive, industrial, and embedded system applications.
This controller offers arbitration bit rates up to 1 Mbps and data bit rates reaching 8 Mbps, supporting high-speed CAN networks. The device interfaces with microcontrollers via a SPI interface running up to 20 MHz clock speeds, facilitating efficient data exchange.
The MCP2517FD-H/JHA includes 31 configurable FIFOs for transmit or receive operation, plus 32 flexible filter and mask objects for precise message filtering, enhancing network traffic management. Additionally, it provides bus health diagnostics and error counters, crucial for maintaining robust and reliable network operation in harsh environments.
Operating within a wide supply voltage range (2.7 V to 5.5 V), and with low active current consumption (12 mA at 5.5 V, 40 MHz CAN clock), it suits power-sensitive applications. The typical sleep current is very low, around 10 µA, aiding energy efficiency during idle periods.
The device supports an extended temperature range from -40°C up to 150°C, making it suitable for automotive and industrial environments. Physically, it is available in compact 14-Pin VDFN packages with wettable flanks and SOIC14, enabling flexible PCB layout options.
This CAN Controller is ideal for embedded systems requiring CAN FD communication, including automotive electronics, industrial automation, and other CAN-based network systems. Its small size, flexible configuration, and robust features make it a versatile solution for CAN network expansion and integration.
Supports Classical CAN 2.0B and CAN FD protocols for flexible data communication. High-speed data transmission with up to 8 Mbps data bit rate. 31 FIFOs and 32 flexible filters enable configurable message handling. Robust bus health diagnostics and error counters monitor network status.
Low power consumption suitable for embedded low-power applications. Wide operating temperature range for automotive and industrial use. Compact packages VDFN14 and SOIC14 for versatile PCB designs.
