Keithley 6487/E Bench Picoammeter is a high-precision digital multimeter designed for measuring low DC currents with sensitivity close to electrometers at a more economical cost. Direct resistance measurement is optimized for resistance values ranging from 50 ohms to 5x10¹⁴ ohms using the Source Voltage/Measure Current technique.

The alternating voltage method extends resistance measurement capability up to 10¹⁶ ohms, beneficial for devices impacted by high background current or noise. The unit is designed to tolerate abusive overloads up to 500 V, protecting components during accidental short circuits or voltage surges.

The rear panel Triax input allows the picoammeter to be operated in floating mode up to 500 V. When not floating, a Triax to BNC adapter may be used, enabling the use of cost-efficient BNC cables. Communication interfaces include RS-232 and IEEE-488, facilitating easy integration with automated test and measurement systems.

A scaled voltage analog output enables transmission of measurement results to devices such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, or strip chart recorders. The built-in Trigger Link Interface simplifies synchronization with other instruments through six independent trigger lines on a single connector, allowing precise control in complex setups.

For testing light-sensitive components, including dark currents in photodiodes or I-V measurements on unpackaged semiconductors, the front panel display may be turned off to prevent light interference.
