Solartron Metrology 922938 Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) sensor is a high precision displacement sensor used extensively in motion control and automation systems. This miniature, DC energized device integrates a built-in electronic oscillator and demodulator, providing a DC output proportional to the position of its core.

The sensor consists of a movable nickel iron core and three coils: one for energisation and two pick-up coils. When driven by a sine wave, it produces an output amplitude and phase directly proportional to core displacement relative to the pick-up coils. A phase sensitive detector is necessary to demodulate the output signal.
