STMicroelectronics VL53L5CXV0GC/1 is a state-of-the-art Time-of-Flight (ToF) 8x8 multizone ranging proximity sensor IC designed for precise distance measurements up to 4 meters.

This miniature sensor integrates a SPAD array, physical infrared filters, and diffractive optical elements (DOE) within a compact 17-pin LGA package sized 6.4 x 3.0 x 1.5 mm, providing a wide 65° diagonal square field of view. The innovative DOE positioned above the vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) projects the field of view onto the target scene, enabling square-shaped coverage.

Unlike traditional infrared sensors, the VL53L5CX leverages direct ToF technology for absolute distance measurement regardless of target color or reflectance, achieving high accuracy and immunity to ambient light effects. It can perform fast multizone ranging at frame rates up to 60 Hz, supporting up to 64 zones (8x8) for detailed spatial mapping and multitarget detection.

Key features include autonomous low-power modes with programmable interrupt thresholds to wake up the host system, patented histogram processing algorithms to reduce cover glass crosstalk beyond 60 cm, and motion indicators per zone to detect target movement dynamics.

The device supports flexible power supply voltages with a minimum of 1.62 V and a maximum of 3.6 V, allowing operation from either 3.3 V or 2.8 V sources combined with 1.8 V I/O.
