It provides optical isolation between two ports thus protecting devices connected on both sides. Typically RS485 can be used for a cable distance of up to 1.2 km. If the signal has to be further carried then repeaters can be used. Converters are normally used for interfacing of serial communication between SCADA / DCS and field devices like PLC, controllers, smart transmitters, etc.
