Microchip ATMEGA16U2-AU is a CMOS 8-bit AVR microcontroller designed with enhanced RISC architecture delivering up to 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz. It operates efficiently over a supply voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V, making it versatile for low-voltage applications.

This microcontroller integrates a 16kB in-system programmable flash memory with read-while-write capabilities, supported by 512 bytes of EEPROM and 512 bytes of SRAM. It also includes 22 programmable I/O lines enabling flexible connectivity for embedded systems.

The device features two flexible 8-bit Timer/Counters with compare functionality and pulse-width modulation (PWM), one USART, SPI serial communication ports, and a programmable watchdog timer with its own oscillator. It supports a debug wire interface for programming and on-chip debugging.

Power management is advanced with multiple selectable low-power modes: Idle mode allows the CPU to be halted while other modules continue running, Power-down mode halts the oscillator and halts most device functions preserving register contents, and Standby mode maintains the oscillator running while the device sleeps for rapid wake-up. This allows optimized power usage in energy-sensitive embedded applications.

This device supports programming security features such as programming lock, and hardware reset on USB bus reset without detachment. It provides master/slave SPI serial interface, internal calibrated oscillator, and multiple interrupt sources offering flexible control in complex systems.
