Sand filters are used to remove suspended solids from water and wastewater. Due to the layers of filter media, sand filters only remove relatively large solids (usually in the 40 micron range and above). The effective size of each grain of sand typically varies between 0.35mm and 1.2mm. The larger the particles, the coarser the filtration. The finer the particles, the finer the filtration.
