Capillary columns are used in gas chromatography to separate components of a mixture. They consist of a column packed with porous silica gel or similar materials. The sample is injected into the column through an injector port. Gas flows through the column under pressure. As the molecules pass through the pores of the column they interact with the stationary phase and become separated according to their affinity for the stationary phase
