In a mixed bed deionizer, cation and anion exchange resins are intimately mixed and housed in a single pressure vessel. By thoroughly mixing cation and anion exchangers in one column, a mixed bed desalter is equivalent to a long row of two bed units. As a result, mixed-bed deionizer water quality is significantly higher than that of a two-bed system. Mixed-bed systems are more efficient at cleaning incoming water, but are more sensitive to feedwater contamination and require more complex regeneration processes.
