In a mixed bed deionizer, cation and anion exchange resins are intimately mixed and housed in a single pressure vessel. By thoroughly mixing cation and anion exchangers in one column, a mixed bed desalter is equivalent to a long row of two bed units. As a result, mixed-bed deionizer water quality is significantly higher than that of a two-bed system. Mixed-bed systems are more efficient at cleaning incoming water, but are more sensitive to feedwater contamination and require more complex regeneration processes. It is used to polish to higher purity after initial processing in a bed deionizer or reverse osmosis.
