Hazardous Waste Characterization

Hazardous Waste Characterization involves identification and analysis of waste to determine its physical, chemical, and hazardous properties. The service includes sampling, laboratory testing, and classification based on parameters such as toxicity, ignitability, corrosivity, and reactivity. It helps determine appropriate handling, storage, treatment, and disposal methods. The process is governed under the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016 and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, as regulated by the Central Pollution Control Board. It supports compliance with regulatory requirements and safe waste management practices. The results assist in minimizing environmental risks and ensuring sustainable waste handling.

Scope of service: (Note: Similar to Service 19, with a focus on classification). We perform tests to classify waste as per Hazardous Waste Management Rules, including ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, and toxicity. This involves flash point test, pH test, cyanide/sulfide reactivity tests, and the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The final report assigns waste codes for proper handling and disposal.

Process flow: Waste sampling as per protocol → Laboratory testing for the four characteristics: Ignitability, Corrosivity, Reactivity, and Toxicity (TCLP for 8 metals and 32 organics) → Interpretation of results against HWMR classification criteria → Assignment of appropriate waste code (e.g., 3 1 01) → Preparation of a waste characterization certificate essential for disposal at a TSDF.
